Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
To keep costs down, I've limited my travel to only Portland metro west so that my initial service call of $200 includes nearly all routine maintenance, programing devices, safety, limit settings, balance adjustments as well as the trip cost.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I like to work with your most suitable time for a visit, typically a one hour window early in the day. Sometimes garage door repairs are needed quickly especially when they've become inoperable, so I try to prioritize to get to you ASAP.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I've over 40 years in field experience, so there's not much that I haven't come across. I like to say that anything is possible, but it may be cost effective to consider alternatives.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
As a young man looking for work and a mechanical aptitude, I came across the opportunity to work and learn the trade with Portland Garage Door Specialties and Overhead Door Corporation in the early 1980s, then opened my own business, Omni Garage Door, in June 1986.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Most of my business now is for previous clients or people that they have referred me to. I have found nearly everyone to be friendly appreciative giving me their vote of confidence. It is gratifying to know that I'm providing a valuable service.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Each job takes less than one hour, so although they are all very similar, the uniqueness comes from the challenge of the repairs. I also feel a sense of trust when being invited into the private domain of one's garage. Often much like my own, cluttered with projects, tools, and a staging area for things. Sometimes it's an immaculate shrine for a prized automobile.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Trust me to only do what is necessary. I will offer to change some rollers if needed, will lubricate, adjust, look for signs of ware that may need attention, but I don't believe it's necessary to overhaul everything, because somethings, like springs, will break without any warning because they are rated by cycles, so a knowledgeable guess is all that I can recommend. Expect to have an issue of some sort every 5 to 10 years if your door is used regularly.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Preventative maintenance is key to saving costs. A little lubrication, routine adjustments and awareness of the vulnerability of the mechanics and electronics can extend the useful life of your garage door and opener. Try to get a referral from family, friends or neighbors. There are a lot of slap n dash operations that have opened up recently.
